Writing
Mini-lesson- Mini-lessons in writing are very similar to those in reading and often go hand-in-hand. The mini-lesson is where we can make a suggestion to the whole class, raise a concern, explore an issue, model a technique and teach or reinforce a strategy. After observing our students engaging in their own important work we decide what we can suggest or demonstrate that might help the most. A mini-lesson lasts about 8-10 minutes.
Independent Writing- After the mini-lesson, students work in various spots around the room. They may be at their seat or at a spot on the carpet with clipboard laying on their belly. The total time lasts for about 25-30 minutes depending on the students' stamina. During this time some students may be involved in conferences with the teacher. Teachers will also work with small groups of students to reinforce various skills.
Sharing- At the end of Writing Workshop, students are brought together for a 5-10 minute group share and reflection. Students can share their thoughts on their peers' writing pieces and give them compliments.
